Dilip Kumar Rejected Mother India?

The actor had refused to star in the movie, and this revelation comes straight from himself. Mother India had an interesting casting journey. The inclusion of Nargis was debated as she was about to play the mother of characters close to her age, a decision considered risky in cinema back then. However, it turned out to be the most golden decision of her career. Amidst this casting conundrum, Dilip Kumar was also approached for a significant role but turned it down for the reason that Nargis had previously starred alongside him as a romantic interest. The actor was sceptical of playing the role of her son as it would lead to a different perception of him.

Why Did Dilip Kumar Say No?

When Mehboob Khan was making Mother India, he approached Dilip Kumar to play one of the sons. While it's unclear which son he was meant to portray, Kumar himself discussed the reasons for his refusal. In his autobiography, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, he revealed his thought process.

"When Mehboob [Khan] Sahab discussed Mother India with me in the early 1950s, I thought it was a brilliant and timely concept and it had to be made at any cost. The role he could offer me was one of the sons of heroine Nargis, and I pointed out that it would be an incongruous casting after all the romancing she and I had done in earlier films, such as Mela (1948) and Babul (1950)," Kumar wrote. Having shared the screen as romantic leads in earlier films, Kumar found it strange and uncomfortable to play Nargis's son, a sentiment that ultimately led him to decline the role.
