SonyLIV’s most ambitious show of the year, The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, is here. But can it survive the flood of heavyweight releases dropping across Netflix, Prime Video, ZEE5, and JioHotstar in the same week?
SonyLIV has never been the loudest player in the Indian OTT space, but it has quietly built a reputation for quality content. With critically acclaimed shows like Gullak, Undekhi, and Freedom at Midnight in its library, the platform has found a loyal audience. But 2025 hasn’t been kind so far. Apart from The Waking of a Nation, the platform has had a relatively quiet year. Now, everything rests on one new title The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case.
Directed by the renowned Nagesh Kukunoor and featuring a powerful ensemble led by Amit Sial, Vidyuth Gargi, Sahil Vaid, and Rama Rao Jadhav, The Hunt feels like a turning point. The premise is bold, the trailer intense, and the casting pitch perfect. Everything about it screams potential. Yet, its release timing is what makes the challenge bigger.
The Hunt drops just as every major OTT platform is launching a major release. Prime Video is ready to unleash Heads of State, a big budget Hollywood action comedy starring Idris Elba, John Cena, and Priyanka Chopra. Netflix is bringing back The Sandman Season 2, one of its most visually rich and globally loved series. Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life is expected to spark frenzy on Netflix. ZEE5 and JioHotstar are also in the mix with Kaalidhar Laapata and The Good Wife respectively.
This kind of clash would be intimidating for any show, let alone one from a platform that has historically relied on slow burn word of mouth rather than splashy marketing. SonyLIV’s challenge is not just to get people to watch The Hunt but to notice it in the first place. And in a world where attention spans are constantly being pulled in every direction, visibility is everything.
What might help is the fact that The Hunt is rooted in one of the most debated and politically sensitive events in Indian history. If done with nuance, the series could resonate far beyond regular OTT audiences and create waves in news cycles, social media, and cultural conversations. But for that to happen, SonyLIV needs to back this project like it matters. The platform must push it into the spotlight with urgency and pride.
This could be the show that defines SonyLIV’s 2025. But only if the audience gets to see it through the noise.
