Amitabh Bachchan Opens Up About Hepatitis Battle

On Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh Bachchan revealed a painful chapter of his medical history that traces back to his near-fatal accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982. After undergoing multiple blood transfusions, he unknowingly contracted the hepatitis B virus from one of the donors. The disease went undetected for years until a routine check-up in 2005 revealed that 75% of his liver had been destroyed. The actor candidly said, “Now I am living with 25% of my liver.” His honesty about the ordeal highlighted the importance of regular health checkups and early detection.

His Struggle with Tuberculosis

Apart from hepatitis, Bachchan also battled spinal tuberculosis in 2000, a condition he described as one of the most painful phases of his life. He revealed that he had been diagnosed on the very day he was set to begin hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati. Despite severe pain and a rigorous year-long treatment, Bachchan continued working, often relying on multiple painkillers daily just to manage through shooting. His ability to power through such a debilitating condition demonstrated immense strength and dedication.

Why He Advocates for Health Awareness

Bachchan explained that his personal battles with life-threatening illnesses shaped his commitment to raising awareness for public health causes. Calling himself a TB survivor, he emphasized the power of the word “survivor,” comparing it to surviving a plane crash or a sinking ship. His openness about his struggles has helped destigmatize health issues in India and encouraged people to take medical conditions seriously.

Still Active at 82

At 82, Amitabh Bachchan continues to defy age and health challenges. He currently hosts the 17th season of Kaun Banega Crorepati and was recently seen in the Tamil action drama Vettaiyan, where he shared screen space with Rajinikanth, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, and Manju Warrier. His career remains active and impactful, reflecting his enduring passion for cinema and storytelling.

A Journey of Resilience

From surviving a near-fatal accident to living with only 25% of his liver and overcoming tuberculosis, Amitabh Bachchan’s health journey is one of resilience and courage. His ability to remain relevant and inspirational despite these struggles makes him not just a cinematic icon but also a symbol of survival and strength.
