Court Grants Relief to Rhea Chakraborty

The Bombay High Court has ordered the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to return actor Rhea Chakraborty’s passport, which had been seized as part of her bail conditions in the high-profile 2020 drugs case. The court emphasized that she has followed all conditions diligently and never once failed to appear for hearings, concluding that there is no reason to doubt her commitment to the legal process.

Why the Passport Plea Was Filed

Rhea’s legal team, led by Ayaz Khan, filed a plea requesting the return of her passport, arguing that the restriction had caused significant professional setbacks. As an actor, Rhea often receives international opportunities, but the constant need to seek court permissions led to delays and missed projects. Her lawyer highlighted that she has never violated court orders and had always returned on time when permitted to travel abroad in the past.

NCB’s Objection and Court’s Response

The NCB opposed her request, claiming that she should not be granted special privileges because of her celebrity status. They also raised concerns about the possibility of her not returning to India. However, the bench, headed by Justice Neela Gokhale, noted that other accused in the same case had been given similar relief and stressed that Rhea’s consistent compliance with bail terms made her a reliable party.

Conditions for Passport Return

While allowing Rhea to regain her passport, the court laid down specific conditions. She must attend every hearing unless exempted, provide her travel itinerary including flights and accommodation at least four days before departure, and keep her mobile phone active while informing authorities immediately upon her return to India.

Rhea’s Reflections on the Case

Earlier this year, during the NDTV Yuva Conclave, Rhea spoke about receiving a clean chit in the case from the CBI. She admitted it was not a moment of happiness but of relief, especially for her parents who had endured social scrutiny. She explained that while nothing could undo the personal loss of Sushant Singh Rajput, the clearance allowed her family to move around more freely without constant judgment.

What This Means for Her Career

The return of her passport is expected to open doors for Rhea Chakraborty to resume her international work commitments, including shoots, auditions, and collaborations abroad. For an actor whose career was stalled by legal hurdles and public controversies, this decision marks a step toward normalcy and rebuilding her professional path.
