Bollywood actor and producer John Abraham has never shied away from appreciating quality cinema, but his recent remarks show just how deeply he admires the Malayalam film industry. In a candid Idea Exchange session with The Indian Express, John called Malayalam cinema the most fearless in the country and praised its ability to tell stories that push boundaries while staying authentic to the audience.
Speaking about the kind of cinema he wants to support, John said that as of today, the best films in India come from the Malayalam film industry. He openly named Mohanlal as his favourite actor “by light years” and added that he also greatly admires Meryl Streep for her craft. But the moment that truly stood out in the conversation was when he spoke about Mammootty’s bold performance in Kaathal – The Core. The film features the veteran star as a politician whose homosexuality is revealed in the storyline, a choice that John described as “brave” and inspiring. “For a man of his stature to take on such a role, it says so much about his courage and the kind of cinema Malayalam films are championing,” John said.
John also revealed that he has taken his admiration a step further by establishing a writer’s room in Kerala. The goal is to generate fresh ideas inspired by the storytelling style of Malayalam cinema, with the potential to produce films both nationally and in Malayalam.
“It is the right time to invest in Malayalam films because they are fantastic. I want to produce more Malayalam films, but I also want to explore other industries. The important thing is to keep the storytelling authentic,” he explained.
The actor’s praise highlights not only the growing influence of Malayalam cinema across India but also the increasing appetite for stories that defy convention and tackle subjects often avoided in mainstream narratives.
On the work front, John was last seen in the political thriller The Diplomat. His upcoming project, Tehran, is set for a direct release on ZEE5 on August 14, where he will once again explore a world of political intrigue and high-stakes drama.
