Romantic comedies have always been a crowd favorite, and this season it is Param Sundari that has taken center stage. Directed by Tushar Jalota and featuring Sidharth Malhotra alongside Janhvi Kapoor, the film released on August 29 and has wrapped up its first weekend with a promising total of Rs 26.75 crore at the domestic box office. For fans of lighthearted love stories, this one has brought back the joy of watching a rom-com on the big screen.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film began with a decent Rs 7.25 crore on its opening day. Things picked up significantly on Saturday when the collections jumped by more than 27 percent to Rs 9.25 crore. Sunday turned out to be the biggest day yet, with another 13 percent rise, pushing the single-day collection to Rs 10.45 crore. These numbers have given the film a steady three-day total of Rs 26.75 crore.

While this is an encouraging start, trade experts have pointed out that the weekdays will be crucial in determining whether the film can hold its ground. Strong weekend numbers are important, but the film will need consistent collections across the week to continue its momentum.

Audience response and occupancy

Param Sundari has performed best in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. On Sunday, the film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 20.71 percent. Evening shows saw the highest turnout with close to 30 percent seats filled, while morning shows were weaker at around 10 percent. Night shows dipped slightly to 18.39 percent.

Delhi NCR had the widest release with more than 1200 screenings and managed an average occupancy of 20 percent. Mumbai with 878 shows achieved a turnout of 19.50 percent, while Bengaluru emerged as the standout city with nearly 40 percent occupancy across its 280 screenings. Cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Jaipur also reported healthy footfall, though Surat lagged behind with only 10 percent despite having a large number of shows.

The story behind the rom-com

At the heart of Param Sundari is the clash of two very different worlds. The film follows Param, played by Sidharth Malhotra, a carefree Delhi boy who spends his father’s money investing in flashy new-age startups. His life takes an unexpected turn when he tries out an AI-based matchmaking app called Soulmates and gets paired with Sundari, portrayed by Janhvi Kapoor.

Sundari is a traditional South Indian girl from Kerala who runs her ancestral homestay with her uncle. What follows is a story of cultural differences, comic misunderstandings, and the slow discovery of common ground between two people who seem completely mismatched. The film blends humor with heart, while also asking whether technology can really help people find true love.

The challenge from Saiyaara

Despite being promoted as one of the biggest romantic entertainers of the year, Param Sundari has faced unexpected competition from Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara. Starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, Saiyaara has turned out to be a surprise blockbuster and is already the second-highest grosser of the year. Its success has pulled some audiences away from Param Sundari and created a tougher box office battle than expected.

Even so, the star power of Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor has given Param Sundari an edge in the opening weekend. The chemistry between the leads has been a major draw and early audience reactions have been largely positive. The coming week will show whether the film can withstand the Saiyaara wave and carve its own space at the box office.

Final thoughts

Crossing Rs 26 crore in three days is no small feat for a romantic comedy in today’s competitive market. While action blockbusters and thrillers often dominate the big screen, the performance of Param Sundari shows that there is still a strong appetite for heartwarming love stories when paired with good performances and music.

As the weekdays unfold, all eyes will be on whether the film maintains steady numbers and strengthens its position in theaters. For now, Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor can celebrate a solid opening and the audience can enjoy a rom-com that blends modern themes with traditional charm.
