The Defamation Suit
In a significant legal move, former Narcotics Control Bureau Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede has approached the Delhi High Court, filing a defamation suit against Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, Netflix, and other associated parties. Wankhede alleges that Aryan Khan’s debut directorial series The Bastards of Bollywood contains false and malicious content that damages his professional reputation. The plea argues that the show uses characters and storylines directly linked to his high-profile cases and portrays him in a negative light without factual basis.
The Controversial Scene
The dispute gained traction after a particular scene from the series started trending online. In the sequence, an officer raids a high-profile party and ignores non-celebrities while targeting a Bollywood guest for arrest despite the absence of drugs. Netizens were quick to connect the dots, drawing parallels to Aryan Khan’s 2021 arrest in the Mumbai cruise drugs case, an operation led by Wankhede. Although Aryan was taken into custody, no narcotics were found on him, making the incident one of the most controversial episodes in recent Bollywood history.
The Past Case and Allegations
The arrest had snowballed into a massive media storm when the Central Bureau of Investigation accused Wankhede of attempting to extort Rs 25 crore from the Khan family in exchange for lenient treatment. Reports alleged that Rs 50 lakh was paid, though Wankhede has denied all charges consistently. The case had split public opinion, with supporters lauding his crackdown on drugs and critics accusing him of targeting celebrities.
Court Hearing Ahead
The Delhi High Court is now expected to take up the defamation plea in the coming weeks. Wankhede’s petition demands accountability from the creators for what he calls “baseless dramatization” of real-life incidents. The outcome of the case could set an important precedent for how far filmmakers can go when drawing inspiration from ongoing or recent controversies.
