Aamir Khan has finally opened up about why his nephew, actor Imran Khan, drifted away from the Bollywood spotlight. In a recent interview, Aamir offered a rare perspective into Imran’s decade-long absence from the big screen, pointing to something deeper than just box office numbers: identity.
Imran, who won hearts with his breakout roles in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly, seemed poised for mainstream stardom. Yet, instead of capitalizing on his good looks and early success, he quietly stepped away. Now, Aamir reveals why.
“He was constantly being offered typical commercial films because he looked the part,” Aamir said. “But Imran never related to that idea of herogiri. He didn’t want to be a star. He wanted to be an actor. He is someone who feels more alive playing real, grounded characters. The kind that doesn’t rely on slow motion walks or punchlines.”
Aamir explained that the industry expected Imran to slot into a conventional leading man role, something that clashed with his creative instincts. “He shines in stories like Delhi Belly. But when placed in a typical masala film setup, he felt out of place. That’s not his natural space.”
Imran himself had previously mentioned that his decision to leave films was gradual, rooted in a growing disconnect with the industry’s obsession with fame and numbers. But fans might not have to wait much longer. Reports suggest that Imran is set to return with Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, a Netflix original alongside Bhumi Pednekar, directed by Break Ke Baad’s Danish Aslam.
Whether or not he picks up where he left off, one thing is clear. Imran Khan was never meant to play a Bollywood stereotype. He was always trying to play something more real.
