A new kind of gangster comedy has dropped on Amazon Prime Video, and it is far from the slick, dark-toned thrillers we’re used to. Chennai City Gangsters takes the idea of a heist and wraps it in humour, chaos, and characters who are anything but criminal masterminds. Directed by Arun Keshav and Vikram Rajeshwar, this Tamil-language film is now streaming and it promises a lot more than just stolen money. It delivers confusion, camaraderie, and a whole lot of comedy.

The plot begins with a simple goal. A bank employee teams up with four ex-gangsters to recover money they believe is rightfully theirs. But before you settle into what feels like a familiar setup, the film throws in two strangers whose arrival turns the plan upside down. What follows is a string of unpredictable turns that blur the line between heist and havoc. As each character’s motive unfolds, the film builds tension and hilarity through layered flashbacks, ridiculous miscommunications, and classic Tamil punchlines.

The cast includes a mix of comedic and veteran talent. Names like Anandraj, Illavarasu, Redin Kingsley, Shihan Hussaini, Livingston, Vaibhav Raddy, and Motta Rajendran bring distinct flavours to each role. Their chemistry and impeccable timing carry the film even when the pace stumbles. The music by D. Imman adds local flavour and bounce, while Tijo Tomy’s cinematography gives the film its quirky urban look. Suresh A. Prasad’s editing helps in weaving the flashback-laced narrative smoothly.

Having released in theatres on June 20, the film saw mixed reviews, with some loving the offbeat approach and others left wanting more polish. The current IMDb rating stands at 5.8, but with its arrival on Prime Video, the film might find a second life with home audiences who are always on the lookout for something light and entertaining.

Chennai City Gangsters does not try to be a perfect crime film. Instead, it leans fully into its identity as a madcap comedy about flawed men with a flawed plan. And in that space, it delivers. If you’re looking for a break from high-stakes thrillers or sentimental dramas, this could be the chaotic ride you didn’t know you needed.
