Tehran, his long-delayed action thriller, finally finds its platform ZEE5. After months of speculation about whether it would land in cinemas or go digital, the answer is clear. The film will stream from August 14, just a day before India’s Independence Day, and if the latest trailer is anything to go by, it’s bringing the heat.
The trailer is a tightly edited, high-tension rollercoaster. It opens with devastating bomb blasts, political chaos, and a tense air of distrust. John Abraham plays Rajeev Kumar, a Delhi Police officer who is thrown into a tangled web of international terror, betrayal, and survival. His mission? Eliminate the mastermind behind the attacks. But as he races against time, he finds himself hunted by foreign intelligence, isolated by his own government, and labelled everything from hero to traitor.
What makes Tehran stand out is its gritty realism. The action is raw and relentless, stripped of Bollywood flair and instead focused on grounded storytelling. John Abraham, known for his physicality and intensity, seems perfectly cast in a role that demands steel nerves and layered emotions. His portrayal of a stoic officer pushed into moral gray zones looks like a return to form after a mix of box office hits and misses.
The film’s direct-to-OTT release raised eyebrows initially. But with War 2 releasing on the same weekend, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, it was a tactical move. Theatres will be booked solid with War 2 mania. Any other film would have struggled to find space or attention. Tehran taking the OTT route isn’t a loss it’s a strategic dodge. The same goes for Republic Day 2026, which already has Border 2 locked in as a mega theatrical release.
For a film like Tehran, which carries a big production budget and an ambitious plot, a mid-level box office clash could have spelled disaster. On OTT, however, the game changes. John Abraham’s previous digital release The Diplomat did very well on streaming. And ZEE5’s platform reach, especially around national holidays, gives Tehran a perfect launchpad.
In a time where geopolitical thrillers are gaining massive traction online, Tehran feels like it has the ingredients to be a breakout success. Its layered storytelling, tense narrative, and action-heavy treatment are all tailor-made for binge-worthy streaming. With War 2 commanding theatres, Tehran may just rule the digital battlefield.
