Malayalam cinema continues to shine on the international stage as Bramayugam, starring Mammootty, has been selected for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ prestigious film series, Where the Forest Meets the Sea: Folklore From Around the World. The screening will take place on February 12, 2026, marking India’s only entry in this globally recognized showcase.

A Historic Moment for Malayalam Cinema

Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, Bramayugam was released in February 2024 and was celebrated for its unique artistic vision. Set in 17th-century Malabar, the black-and-white horror drama follows the haunting story of a man who lives in a decaying mansion with his cook, unraveling eerie layers of power, folklore, and fear.

The film earned critical acclaim for its storytelling and visual brilliance, grossing over ₹85 crore worldwide — a rare achievement for a Malayalam horror film. Mammootty’s performance as Koduman Potty received wide praise for its depth and intensity, further solidifying his reputation as one of India’s most versatile actors.

Recognition by the Academy Museum

Announcing the news, Mammootty expressed his excitement, sharing that Bramayugam will represent India at the Academy Museum’s exclusive series. The event, which begins on January 10, 2026, will feature films that explore folklore and cultural storytelling traditions from across the world, with Bramayugam serving as a key highlight.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, located in Los Angeles, is renowned for celebrating global cinematic heritage. Featuring film archives, exhibitions, and curated screenings, it remains a landmark institution for filmmakers and audiences alike.

Filmmakers React and Global Acclaim

Director Rahul Sadasivan, who recently released his new horror film Dies Irae starring Pranav Mohanlal, continues to earn praise for redefining the horror genre in Indian cinema. Industry voices, including filmmaker Kiran Rao, have applauded Bramayugam for its bold storytelling and artistic conviction. Rao noted, “Malayalam filmmakers have the courage to tell stories that are deeply rooted yet artistically daring. Bramayugam is a brilliant example of that conviction.”

Availability and Legacy

After its successful theatrical run, Bramayugam premiered on Sony LIV in March 2024, making it accessible to global audiences. The film also stars Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, and Amalda Liz in pivotal roles.

This international recognition cements Bramayugam’s place as a landmark achievement in Indian cinema — a film that merges folklore, artistry, and fear with unmatched brilliance.
