This Diwali season, moviegoers had a tough choice between two big Bollywood releases — Maddock Films’ horror comedy Thamma starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, and the romantic drama Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat featuring Sonam Bajwa and Harshvardhan Rane. Both films released on October 21 and opened to packed cinemas, but the box office numbers reveal a clear winner.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s Thamma Opens With A Bang

According to early industry estimates, Thamma stormed the box office with a spectacular ₹24 crore opening on its first day, making it Ayushmann Khurrana’s biggest career opener. Backed by Maddock Films, the horror comedy has struck the right chord with audiences who loved the earlier Stree films. Fans were thrilled by the blend of humour, horror, and surprise cameos from the shared universe, making the movie a complete festive entertainer.

Advance bookings for Thamma were strong, with over ₹10 crore collected before release through pre-booked tickets across major cities. The film’s witty dialogues, engaging storyline, and Ayushmann’s energetic performance have made it the go-to Diwali watch for families and young audiences alike.

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat Wins Hearts, But Trails At The Box Office

Directed by Milap Milan Zaveri, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat opened decently with ₹8.5 crore on day one. Featuring Sonam Bajwa, Harshvardhan Rane, Shaad Randhawa, and Sachin Khedekar, the romantic drama managed an overall occupancy of nearly 40 percent across India.

The film had a strong presence in Delhi NCR, recording around 45 percent occupancy, while Mumbai contributed close to 37 percent across its 371 screenings. Despite fewer shows and screens compared to Thamma, the movie received positive social media buzz, with many viewers praising its music and emotional depth. Influencer Elvish Yadav even called it a “must-watch” on X, appreciating its dialogues and songs.

The Diwali Winner So Far

While both films have performed well in their respective genres, Thamma currently leads the Diwali box office race by a wide margin. Its combination of horror, comedy, and festive timing has helped it connect with a broader audience. Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, on the other hand, is expected to pick up over the weekend with strong word-of-mouth, especially among younger viewers drawn to its romantic storyline.

As the festival weekend continues, the clash between these two contrasting films — one spooky and hilarious, the other passionate and emotional — promises to keep audiences entertained and the box office busy.
