As Bollywood gears up for one of its most anticipated releases, Border 2, excitement is mounting for a story rooted in real heroism. Directed by Anurag Singh and backed by T-Series Films, the movie features Varun Dhawan in the role of Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya alongside Sunny Deol. Scheduled for release on January 23, 2026, just ahead of Republic Day, the film pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of one of India’s most respected war heroes.
The Real Hero Behind the Character
Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya was born on May 5, 1936, in Sisana village of Haryana’s Sonipat district. From a young age, he was drawn to the call of duty and joined the Indian Army after completing his education. Commissioned into the Grenadiers Regiment in 1963, he quickly rose through the ranks due to his discipline, dedication, and valor.
His first major combat experience came during the Indo-Pak war of 1965, where he served in Rajasthan. By 1969, he had been promoted to Captain, and his leadership skills were already widely recognized within his regiment.
The Battle of Basantar
The defining moment of Colonel Hoshiar Singh’s career came during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. His regiment was tasked with securing a crucial bridgehead across the Basantar River in the Shakargarh sector of Jammu. As the commander of the left forward company, he was responsible for capturing the heavily fortified Pakistani stronghold of Jarpal.
Despite facing relentless machine gunfire and intense shelling, Hoshiar Singh led his men from the front. Displaying unmatched bravery, he personally engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand combat, capturing the objective with remarkable courage.
The following days saw the enemy launch multiple counterattacks, supported by tanks and heavy artillery. Refusing to back down, Hoshiar Singh moved from trench to trench, motivating his soldiers to hold their ground. Even after sustaining severe injuries, he refused evacuation, continuing to fight until a ceasefire was declared.
His extraordinary valor resulted in heavy enemy losses, with 85 Pakistani soldiers, including three senior officers, killed in the battle. His unwavering spirit and leadership inspired his troops and turned the tide in India’s favor.
Recognition and Legacy
For his acts of supreme bravery and leadership, Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya was awarded the Param Vir Chakra on Republic Day, 1972 — India’s highest military honour for gallantry. His courage and determination continue to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike.
Colonel Dahiya’s story represents the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army — courage in the face of impossible odds and devotion to the nation above all else.
Varun Dhawan’s Portrayal in Border 2
In Border 2, Varun Dhawan steps into the shoes of this legendary soldier. The film’s first look poster, which features Varun in full military uniform with fierce determination in his eyes, has already stirred patriotic emotions across the nation.
Border 2 aims to revive the legacy of the original 1997 classic starring Sunny Deol, while highlighting unsung heroes like Colonel Dahiya, whose valor changed the course of history.
