Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest project, the Netflix series Heeramandi is being praised for its larger-than-life depiction of the politics and powerplay, amidst the streets of pre-independence Lahore.
The fans of the director are aware of his musical genius. Bhansali is also responsible for the music direction of his movies, including “Padmavat” and “Bajirao Mastani”. The director aims for perfection in his craft, and that is reflected in the musical tracks of his film.
Heeramandi, which is set for release on Netflix, has also released two beautiful musical renditions. The tracks are trending on music charts and are being applauded for their ingenuity.
The first song, “Sakal Ban” marks the launch of Bhansali’s music label, Bhansali Music. With Raja Hasan’s soulful voice, the video of the song shows the cast of the movie in all its grandeur. With names like Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sharmin Sehgal, the song is a retelling of an old poem.
The song traces back its roots to Amir Khusrao, who was a poet back in the 12th century. The melody is borrowed from one of his famous poems, which is about a cavalcade heading to the temple with yellow flowers. In the poem, Khusrao enquires about the occasion and is told that the flowers are for the goddess Saraswati, who is pleased when worshipped with yellow flowers.
Khusrao takes these yellow flowers to his mentor, Hazrat Nizamuddin, who is mourning the death of his nephew.
Bhansali’s depiction is aesthetic, the same as his previous visually grand music videos of “Deewani Mastani” and “Ghoomar”.
