Sony LIV’s latest original series Mayasabha: Rise of the Titans is anything but your average political drama. Co-created by Deva Katta and Kiran Jay Kumar, this powerful Telugu series presents an unfiltered look at the rise of two young men from humble backgrounds who go on to become giants in Andhra politics. Although fictional, the parallels to real-life figures are undeniable, making the show both intriguing and impactful.

Aadhi Pinisetty and Chaitanya Rao lead the story as Kakarla Krishnam Naidu and Dr MS Rami Reddy, two idealistic friends who slowly transform into rivals as their political ambitions clash. Their friendship, rooted in mutual respect, is tested by ideology, ambition and the realities of power. The series opens in the mid 1990s during a political coup, setting the tone for high-stakes drama inspired by real events that have shaped the state.

Mayasabha isn’t afraid to go back in time. It rewinds to the 1970s, tracing the personal and political journeys of its two leads. Reddy emerges from Kadapa with the drive to uplift his community, while Naidu rises from Chittoor, determined to bring dignity to his family name. Both men begin their journeys with noble intentions, but caste politics, factional violence and systemic corruption force them to make tough choices. One of the standout elements is how the series openly discusses caste and how it becomes a tool rather than a barrier in the quest for power.

The narrative is packed with real-life inspired moments, from hotel coups to character traits that mirror public figures. Scenes of mass rallies, symbolic party colours and campaign vehicles create a vivid tapestry of Telugu political culture. Even the dialogue carries the weight of political commentary, with standout lines offering powerful insight into legacy and control.

Chaitanya Rao’s portrayal of Rami Reddy carries the charm and gravitas associated with YSR. His walk, speech, and persona are realistic and nuanced without leaning into mimicry. Aadhi Pinisetty as Naidu is subtle but magnetic. His transformation from an underestimated player to a strategic force is one of the strongest arcs in the series.

Sai Kumar, Nasser, Ravindra Vijay and a strong ensemble cast elevate the drama, with Nasser’s media tycoon character drawing clear inspiration from real-life news magnates. The show also brings in national politics through Divya Dutta’s character, offering a broader view of the political chessboard.

While a few college flashbacks slow the pace, the rest of the series is sharply focused. With smart writing, layered characters and striking visuals, Mayasabha delivers a potent mix of entertainment and commentary. From themes of loyalty and betrayal to questions about legacy and caste, this show packs a lot into its nine episodes.

As the first season ends on a cliffhanger, promising a Clash of the Titans in Season Two, Mayasabha firmly establishes itself as a political epic worth watching.
