Netflix India had everything going for it this July. Big names. Big productions. A lineup that looked promising on paper. Yet the month has turned out to be a complete letdown. July 2025 might go down as the streamer’s most underwhelming month ever in India, with no title strong enough to redeem the platform’s reputation.

Let’s start with the originals. Aap Jaisa Koi, the much-hyped romantic drama produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, was supposed to be a crowd-puller. Unfortunately, it failed to strike a chord with viewers. Many felt it lacked originality and depth, with comparisons drawn to older Dharma films that did the same formula better. While it trended briefly due to online debate, its viewership numbers never took off. What was supposed to be a fresh romance ended up feeling like a recycled storyline with no emotional payoff.

Things didn’t get better with Netflix’s original series Mandala Murders, produced by the powerhouse Yash Raj Films. Despite the backing of one of India’s most reputed banners, the series collapsed under the weight of its own ambition. Viewers pointed out poor writing, clunky dialogue, and a narrative that dragged without payoff. What should have been a gripping thriller quickly became a frustrating watch.

The licensed content also did little to save the month. Films like Thug Life, Detective Ujjawalan, 8 Vasantalu, and Thammudu failed to create any buzz. None of them managed to connect with a wider audience, with most being labeled as forgettable and lacking substance.

What’s worse is that July didn’t have a single breakout title. Normally, even in dull months, at least one project shines through. But this time, there was no such savior. The audience had nothing to celebrate, and for the first time, Netflix India’s monthly performance has gone unscored by our review team.

It’s a rare moment when massive studios like Dharma and YRF both deliver underwhelming results in the same month. Netflix bet big on legacy brands, but July 2025 proved that big names can’t compensate for poor storytelling.

As we move into August, the pressure is on. With major titles lined up and audience trust to regain, Netflix India will need more than just star power. It needs stories that work.
