When Netflix released Qala in 2022, not many expected it to become such a memorable film. Starring Triptii Dimri, then a relatively new face, the story of an ambitious young singer in the 1940s was brought to life not just through its visual beauty but also through its music. Amit Trivedi’s haunting compositions became the soul of the film. Long after the credits rolled, audiences kept humming the songs, making them a part of their lives. That emotional connection helped Qala rise above being just another period drama and turned it into a standout success.

Prime Video is now attempting something similar with Songs of Paradise. The film tells the story of Raj Begum, an iconic singer from Kashmir who carved her place in a male dominated music world. Saba Azad plays the lead role, much like Triptii Dimri did in Qala. Both actresses were not considered major stars at the time of their films, which gave their characters a sense of freshness and vulnerability.

But here is the key difference. While Qala’s music captured listeners from the first note, Songs of Paradise has yet to create the same kind of buzz. Its soundtrack is still waiting to find its audience, and without strong musical recall, the film’s emotional core risks losing its strength. In stories centered on music, the songs do not just support the narrative, they drive it forward and give it lasting impact. Without that magic, even the strongest performances and powerful storytelling can feel incomplete.

That does not mean Songs of Paradise lacks potential. Raj Begum’s story is inherently inspiring, and the Kashmiri setting gives the film a unique cultural richness. If the songs eventually catch on, audiences might rediscover the film in the same way they did with Qala. But in today’s crowded streaming space, where films come and go quickly, timing is everything. Without immediate connection through its music, Songs of Paradise may struggle to leave a long lasting mark.

The comparison between these two films highlights just how important music can be in storytelling. A song can elevate a film into something unforgettable, as seen with Qala. Prime Video’s challenge is not just to deliver Raj Begum’s journey on screen but to make sure her voice and her songs continue to echo in the minds of viewers after the film ends.
