Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom is all set for its digital premiere on Netflix on August 27. The film released in theatres on July 31 and struggled at the box office, falling short of expectations despite its scale and star power. Now, the Netflix release will be crucial in deciding whether the film can find redemption through streaming.

A Crowded OTT Slate

The timing of Kingdom’s OTT release could not be more challenging. On the very same day, Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts drops on JioHotstar, one of the most anticipated superhero outings of the year. Just a day later, Netflix will add My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2 and The Thursday Murders Club starring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

The weekend brings even more competition, with Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino making its Netflix debut on August 29, expected to get a strong reception. The same day also sees multiple new arrivals—Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham on SonyLIV, Shodha on Zee5, and Songs of Paradise on Prime Video. To top it all off, Karate Kid: Legends premieres on Netflix on August 30.

Why Kingdom Struggled in Theatres

Despite the hype, Kingdom failed to impress audiences on the big screen. The movie was criticized for its inconsistent storytelling, illogical plot points, and a rushed second half that seemed more focused on teasing a sequel than delivering a satisfying conclusion.

Even Deverakonda’s star power could not save it from negative reviews and lacklustre word of mouth. With a high budget weighing it down, the film turned into a commercial disappointment.

Can Netflix Give Kingdom a Second Life?

Streaming platforms have often given films a second chance to reach wider audiences. Yet, the problem for Kingdom is not just about visibility but timing. With so many blockbuster shows and films releasing in the same week, grabbing eyeballs will be an uphill battle.

The film’s Netflix run will be a real test of whether a star-led project can overcome weak reviews and thrive in today’s content-heavy OTT landscape. If it fails to make an impact here as well, Kingdom could risk being remembered as one of the year’s biggest missed opportunities.

For now, all eyes are on August 27. Will Kingdom finally win hearts, or get lost in the streaming shuffle?
